Odisha reports 2,138 new COVID-19 cases, 15 fatalities

Bhubaneswar, Oct 17: Odisha’s COVID-19 tally on Friday mounted to 2,64,149 with 2,138 more people testing positive for the infection, while 15 more fatalities pushed the toll to 1,104, a health department official said. The state also registered the recovery of 2,850 patients taking the total number of cured people to 2,41, 385, which is 91.38 per cent of Odisha’s caseload.

Khurda district, of which Bhubaneswar is a part, recorded 361 new cases, followed by Cuttack (156) and Angul (151).

Taking to Twitter, the state health department said, “Regret to inform the demise of fifteen #COVID19 positive patients while under treatment in hospitals.”

Two deaths each were registered in Khurda, Cuttack, Nabarangpur and Sambalpur, and one each in Bhadrak, Bargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Kendrapara, Puri and Sundargarh.

This apart, 53 other COVID-19 positive patients have died due to comorbidities, the official said.

Odisha’s active case number now stands at 21,607 which is 8.17 per cent of the total caseload.

The state tested 38,572 samples for COVID-19 on Thursday, taking the total number of such tests to over 39.59 lakh, the official said.

Meanwhile, in a modification to its October 1 notification, the Odisha government allowed operation of skill training in ITIs, skill training institutes and skill development centres.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation BMC with technical support of the RMRC, Bhubaneswar, also launched the third phase of sero-survey to ascertain the development of antibodies among people. The survey will continue for three days, said Dr Jaysingh Chhatri adding that 1500 samples will be collected.

The first and second sero-survey in the state capital was disappointing as only 1.4 per cent and 5.1 per cent of the population respectively had developed antibodies against COVID-19, a health department official said.

However, the sero-survey conducted in Gajapati district showed about 65 per cent of people had developed antibodies while 50 per cent people had antibodies against COVID-19 in Malkangiri.

The sero-survey had also found 31 per cent of people in Berhampur and 25 per cent population in Rourkela had developed antibodies, the official said.

Meanwhile, the director of Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) Ajay Parida said the people need to be extra-careful during festivals and winter season though there has been a decline in detection of new cases across the state since September 25.
